Sycamore Bend’s Red House in Bath County, VA

Discover the unique opportunity to gain artistic inspiration from nature in a secluded and peaceful cabin at Sycamore Bend's Red House in Bath County, VA. This four-room cottage features modern furnishings, Wi-Fi, and breathtaking landscapes in a tranquil environment that sparks your creative process. The cozy one-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin includes a sufficiently equipped kitchen for self-catering, ensuring residents can prepare their own meals. 4 residencies are available in June and September to artists who complete the application process and are accepted.

Application Process

Applying for the Red House residency is straightforward. The application requires several components that help us understand your artistic vision and goals. Applicants with complete requirements can send their application via email or traditional mail made out to Sycamore Bend to the address below:RHResidency 5503 River Road Millboro, VA 24460 When you submit your application, be sure to include your preferred dates for the residency. Please then mail the $30 non-refundable application fee.

Artist Statement
Share your background, artistic inspiration, and aspirations within a maximum of 500 words.
Plan
Outline your intentions for the Red House residency, including your preferred residency dates. Limit this section to 500 words.
  • Preferred Dates: State your date preferences from most to least preferred.
Public Event
All residents must host one outreach activity or public event/project during their stay. Describe your proposed activity, and goals within 500 words. We would be more than happy to work with you on planning out the details and which parts of the farm are available for it.

Safe, Socially-Distant Outdoor Art Session for Non-Artist Adults

Work Samples
Visual artists should submit five high-quality images of their artwork, scanned or photographs. We prefer 300 dpi, 8 inches maximum on the longest side or JPG scans. Meanwhile, writers should include three writing samples up to 15,000 words. If any of these writings have been published, please let us know.

Red House Residency Dates 2025

Residency applications open on January 5, 2025, and close at midnight EST on February 12, 2025. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by email in late March 2025. Accepted residents must confirm their participation by April 15, 2025. A waiting list will also be maintained. Contact us to inquire about current date availability for 2025.

What To Expect

As a resident at the Red House, please note the following expectations:
  • Bring Your Own Transportation: Given the rural location of our camping cottage, residents must have a car for transportation and grocery runs.
  • Accomplish the Residency Agreement Beforehand: Accepted residents will receive a residency agreement that must be completed and returned to the previously mentioned address one month prior to the start of your stay.
  • Jurying Future Residents: You may be asked to assist in selecting next year's residents by collaborating with the host and other previous residents. Visual artists will review applications from fellow visual artists, while writers will assess writer applications.
